Fire TV Stick slow or lagging? Seven fixes, in order

Updated November 6, 2026

Three things slow a Fire TV Stick down most often: it's low on storage, too many apps are running at once, or the Wi-Fi is weak. Work through these fixes in order and test after each one.

1. Restart it

Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Restart. On a Fire TV smart TV it's Settings → Device & Software → Restart. If the menus are too slow to reach it, unplug the power adapter for about a minute and plug it back in.

A restart closes everything that piled up in the background since the last one.

2. Check free storage

Open Settings → My Fire TV → About → Storage. A stick that is almost full has little room for temporary files, and every menu gets slower.

Amazon gives two thresholds. Below 800 MB of usable space, Fire TV starts offloading apps you haven't opened for 60 days. A system update needs at least 500 MB free to install, so a full stick also stops getting fixes.

3. Clear app cache

On newer Fire OS builds: Settings → Applications → Clear all Application Caches. On sticks without that option, clear the biggest apps one by one under Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → the app → Clear Cache. Our cache guide has the details, including what clearing data does differently.

4. Uninstall apps you don't use

In the same list, pick an app you haven't opened in months and choose Uninstall. Every app you remove frees storage, and an app that isn't installed can't run in the background.

5. Install system updates

Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About and choose the check-for-updates option (on Fire TV smart TVs, under Device & Software). Updates fix performance bugs, but each one also needs that 500 MB of free space.

6. Check the network

If menus are fast but videos buffer, the problem is the connection. Open Settings → Network to see the signal; Amazon's network status tool there shows details under the Advanced button.

7. Turn off what you don't need

Under Settings → Preferences → Privacy Settings you can turn off Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data and Interest-based Ads. These are privacy choices: switching them off sends Amazon less data. No test we know of shows they make the stick faster, so treat this step as tidying, not a speed fix.

A custom launcher won't help on Fire TV. Since Fire OS updates in February 2022, Amazon blocks third-party home screens from replacing the Fire TV home. A sideloaded launcher runs only as an ordinary app. On Android TV and Google TV it's different: see the launcher guide.

Still slow?

A factory reset under Settings → My Fire TV → Reset to Factory Defaults wipes the stick back to new. It removes every app and login, so try it last. A first-generation stick that stays slow after a reset has reached the limit of its hardware.

Do it from your iPhone

Clean My TV does steps 3 and 4 in one pass from your iPhone over Wi-Fi: it clears every app's cache, closes background apps and turns off preinstalled apps you don't use. Anything it turns off can be turned back on from History.
